    EPS File Format

    Short Name EPS
    Long Name Encapsulated PostScript
    Typical File Extensions .eps
    Contains Page Description

PostScript is a language developed by Adobe to describe the layout of a page or pages (typically printed).

Encapsulated PostScript files contain a stream of PostScript data (although some PostScript commands can not be used in EPS files). The content of an EPS file is typically a graphic or part of a page.

EPS files may also contain a preview graphic for screen display, which may stored as an embedded PICT, TIFF, WMF, or occassionally in Adobe's own EPSI format.

Many publishing software packages allow you to work with EPS files. If available in the file, they may show the preview image on the screen. Alternatively the area of a document covered by the EPS data may be shown, on screen, as a gray or hatched rectangle.

When documents containing EPS files are printed:
    • If using a PostScript compatible printer, the high quality PostScript version of the content will be printed.

    • If using a non-PostScript printer, either nothing may be printed, or the preview image (low quality) may be printed.
A technical discussion of basic PostScript graphics can be found in Chapter 24 of Graphics File Formats by David C. Kay and John R. Levine.
