WMF File Format
Windows Metafile (WMF) is a metafile format designed by Microsoft. The WMF format first appeared in Microsoft Windows 2.x, but the more commonly encountered versions are created by Microsoft Windows 3.x or later. Windows 3.x metafiles include a superset of the capabilites from Windows 2.x. WMF files are basically a file recording a sequence of Windows graphics functions, and thus while easily read on Microsoft Windows computers, are much harder to read on other platforms. In 32 bit versions of Windows (Windows NT and Windows 95 and later), this format has been largely superseded by EMF. A technical discussion of this format can be found in Chapter 25 of Graphics File Formats by David C. Kay and John R. Levine.
