Choosing Banner Design Software

Banner advertisements are graphical advertisements that are displayed on your own or third party websites to advertise a product, service, or website. Some of the reasons why you might want to design your own banners include:

You want to advertise your own products, services or websites on third party websites. For example, you could pay other websites or an advertising network to display your banner.
You participate in a banner exchange - in return for displaying other people's banners on your site, you earn credits that are used to display your banner(s) on other people's sites.
You participate in an affiliate program and wish to display banners for third party products or services, since you earn commissions for selling those products and services. (Note: most affiliate programs will provide you with ready-to-use banners, but some may not, or you may believe that you can do better using banners of your own design than the standard banners - check this is allowed by the program's rules though!).
You are a graphic designer, and people pay you to create banners for their businesses.

Whatever the reason there are quite a few different pieces of software that you can use to create banners, so let us review some of the options:

Photo/Graphics Editors

The first option is to use standard photo/graphics editing programs. Some of the cheap/freebie programs are not really up to the job, but the top-end programs like Adobe Photoshop are more than adequate.

Any one of the following programs should be good enough for the task:
- Adobe Photoshop
- Corel PaintShop Pro
- Corel PhotoPaint - Older versions used to be sold separately, but nowadays I think it is usually bundled with other programs. I got my copy as part of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite.
- The GIMP
Banner Templates

It's all very well saying that you can design everything from scratch in a graphics editing program like Adobe Photoshop, but starting from scratch can be a lot of work!

For quicker and more professional results, provided you already own or have access to Adobe Photoshop (or Adobe Photoshop Elements), you should check out a package called Easy Banner Maker^† (reviewed here). This should make it much easier than starting from scratch!
Banner Design Software

There also a couple of standalone programs that you can use for creating banners. These are:
- Easy Banner Creator^†
  (reviewed here)
- Banner Generator Pro^†
  (reviewed here)
The advantage of these programs is they make creating banners really quick, easy and straightforward - even if you don't own (or know how to use) Adobe Photoshop. The disadvantage is that programs are available only for Microsoft Windows (as far as I know), and not the Apple Mac.
