Banner AdvertisementsBanner Advertisements are graphical adverts that are shown on web pages. Usually they display a graphic and/or text message, and when the user clicks on the graphic they are sent to the advertiser's home page or a target page created by the advertiser.Banners are most commonly bitmap graphics or animations in GIF, JPEG or PNG format. GIF banners may include simple animations, whereas as JPEG or PNG banners are purely static pictures. Additionally sometimes banners are designed using created as Flash animations. The process of designing banners is described in our tutorial How To Create A Banner. Banners are important because they allow webmasters to buy or sell advertising space, or alternatively rotate different affiliate program ads as part of their content. If you want to display banner adverts on your site, I recommend that you get a ASP, CGI or PHP banner rotation script (for example: The eBanners CGI Script). Such scripts allow you to easily change the banners being displayed on your site (without having to amend your HTML code every time you want to modify which adverts are displayed), as well as (usually) tracking the number of clicks and displays ("impressions") that each banner receives. This isssue is covered in more detail in our tutorial How To Display Banners.
