MetafileA metafile is a file containing a record of a series of drawing operations. An application working with a metafile is thus able to play back these operations and reproduce the graphic which they represent. The drawing operations may include various vector drawing operations (such as drawing lines, rectangles, circles, etc.), and sometimes bitmap drawing operations. The types of drawing operations and the format in which they are stored, varies widely, often according to the type of computer used to produce the metafile. (See Metafile File Formats). While metafiles are generally designed for use with a particular computer system or operating system, it is sometimes possible for software to play back metafiles created on one system, on another. Additionally, in some cases, metafiles can be rescaled (in order to be played back on a different device or a different area of the screen, etc.), or even edited in a similar way to vector files.
