This format, originally developed by Aldus (now part of Adobe)
is a format designed for exchanging bitmap
data between applications.
TIFF is particularly popular for this purpose
in printing, prepress and publishing
applications.
TIFF is an incredibly versatile format, with numerous options,
and supports a number of
compression options, including
uncompressed,
CCITT,
PackBits,
LZW
and JPEG.
Because TIFF is such a flexible format, it is relatively easy for
a software developer to create an application which can output
TIFF complaint files. However, the format's versatility and flexibility
is also a drawback, in that it is much harder for software developers
to create applications which are able to read all TIFF files.
This problem is somewhat mitigated by the TIFF 6.0 specification,
released in June 1992, which encourages programmers to support a baseline level of capabilities.
Software complaint with the TIFF 6.0 baseline, should be able to read
most TIFF files.
A technical discussion of this format can be found in Chapter 6 of Graphics File Formats by David C. Kay and John R. Levine.
