Color Model

In order to represent colors in a computer system, the color needs to be converted to a series of numbers.

There are many ways that this conversion can be done, each with different advantages and disadvantages. These are refered to a "color models":

Some of the main color models include:
  • CMYK - generally used for printing

  • HSI - sometimes used for screen displays

  • RGB - generally used for screen displays

  • YCbCr - sometimes used for storing images, particularly video images
