HSI
HSI (an abbreviation for "Hue Saturation Intensity")
is a color model that can be
used to represent colors.
As the name suggests HSI breaks color data into three component values:
- Hue (H) which identifies the color to be used.
- Saturation (S) which defines the amount of white to be mixed with the color. For example, dark chocolate is a brown (hue) with little saturation, whereas milk chocolate is brown (hue) with greater saturation.
- Intensity (I) describes the brightness.
The main advantage of HSI is it is more intuitive for most people to manipulate colors this way than other
color models such as
RGB.
Some file formats allow images to be stored in terms of HSI
values (and some graphic adapters also accept HSI data),
but even when this is not available, application software may allow
colors to manipulated in this way.
