Artifact
Artifacts are unwanted distortions that can appear in images
(especially bitmaps) as a
result of the way that they are processed by computer
systems.
Some of the most common types of artifacts include:
- Edge Effect and other distortions
which can occur in some images as a result of
lossy compression, for example in the
JPEG file format.
- Halo which can occur when attempting to
use an anti-aliased image as transparent.
- Jaggies which can occur due to the
limitations of fitting a graphic into a pixel grid.
Jaggies can be exacerbated by enlarging
images.
- Noise and Patterns which can be introduced into images as a result
of dithering.
- Skew which can appear in images produced by a
scanner.
Skew can be corrected for by a deskew process.
- Speckles which can
appear in images produced by a
scanner.
These can often be removed
by despeckle process.
- Stitching which occurs as
a result of joining multiple segments into one image.
Stitching can also occur in images produced
by a
scanner if the cameras are misaligned.
