StitchingStitching is an artifact which can appear in a large image (particularly bitmaps) which is made from combining smaller images. For example, if use you have a very large printed document and want to use a scanner to convert it into electronic format. You would either have to use a large format scanner (most likely with multiple cameras), or scan the document in segements and attempt to combine them together using paint software. In either case, stitching may occur: the cameras in a large format scanner may not be perfectly aligned, or the various segments from multiple scans may not match up perfectly. Stitching usually shows up as a visible distortions (or perhaps a line in color images) along the boundaries between each segment of the final image.
