How To Slice An Image Into Smaller Images

Chapter 2: Slicing Images Vertically Into Multiple Segments

The technique described in the last chapter is all well and good, but what if we want to vertically slice an image into more than two pieces?

Easy: Simply slice your original image into two pieces, then keep slicing the pieces again by repeating the same technique on them.

For example, image that I have a 300 pixel wide image that I want to slice into five pieces that are 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 pixels wide.

In other words, I want to get this:

From this:

Here's how I would do it:
  1. I'd slice my original image into 220 and 80 pixel wide images:

    • The 80 pixel wide piece (on the right), is the right piece, and is now complete.

    • The 220 pixel wide piece (on the left), contains the four left pieces (40+50+60+70 = 220), let's imagine that I saved it as temp1.gif.

  2. Next I'd start work on temp1.gif and slice that into 150 and 70 pixel wide images:

    • The 70 pixel wide piece (on the right), is the second from the right piece, and is now complete.

    • The 150 pixel wide piece (on the left), contains the three left pieces (40+50+60 = 150), let's imagine that I saved it as temp2.gif.

  3. Next I'd start work on temp2.gif and slice that into 90 and 60 pixel wide images:

    • The 60 pixel wide piece (on the right), is the middle piece, and is now complete.

    • The 90 pixel wide piece (on the left), contains the two left pieces (40+50 = 90), let's imagine that I saved it as temp3.gif.

  4. Finally, I'd start work on temp3.gif and slice that into 40 and 50 pixel wide images:

    • The 50 pixel wide piece (on the right), is the second from the left piece, and is now complete.

    • The 40 pixel wide piece (on the right), is the left most piece, and is now complete.

  5. And if you check back, you'll see I now have all five pieces.
