How To Display Banners

Chapter 2: Using JavaScript

Another idea for displaying banners on your web site is to use JavaScript. What you can do is write a little JavaScript file to pick out a banner from a selection coded into the script, and then link to this JavaScript file from your HTML pages using the <SCRIPT> tag.

(If you don't understand JavaScript then get yourself a good JavaScript Tutorial).

This approach has the advantage that if you want to update banners on all your pages you only need to update the one JavaScript file. However, this is offset by the fact that it can be fiddly to create and update this JavaScript file, even if you're an expert.

Let's look at the whole list of advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages:
  • Works on all web hosts.

  • You can update the banner(s) shown on all pages of your site, by just changing one file.

  • The banner(s) shown on your pages can rotate: if a visitor returns to a page, you can show a different banner each time (for example, if the JavaScript is coded to pick a different banner each time from the list.
Disadvantages:
  • Fiddly to implement and maintain.

  • Doesn't work if user has JavaScript disabled in their browser.

  • No tracking: You have no idea how many times each of your banners was displayed or clicked. This makes harder for you to know which affiliate program links are performing, and also makes it much harder to make money by selling advertising.

If you review this list, while in some ways it's better than the list in the previous chapter, in other ways it's worse. The lack of tracking is still a major problem and using JavaScript does nothing to solve this problem.
