This is a metafile format developed for the WordPerfect word processor and DrawPerfect.

The format allows very complex graphics data, including vectors, bitmaps and even Encapsulated PostScript. However, in practice, most WPG files are quite simple, containing lines, polylines, rectangles and the like.

The original 1.0 version of this format was used in WordPerfect 5.x (in WordPerfect 5.0, each file contains only vectors or a bitmap, but in WordPerfect 5.1, files can contain both as well as Encapsulated PostScript).

A newer 2.0 version of the format was introduced in WordPerfect, subsequent to the 5.x versions, and little information seems to be publicly available on it (so this discussion is necessarily limited to the 1.0 format).

WPG files can contain up to 256 colors, however there is a strong association with the default colors used on the IBM VGA display adapter.

Bitmap data in WPG files is compressed using a PackBits compression algorithm.

A technical discussion of this format can be found in Chapter 12 of Graphics File Formats by David C. Kay and John R. Levine. The discussion is limited to WPG 1.0 files from WordPerfect 5.x, and does not discuss the WPG 2.0 files.
