Group 3 Compression

Group 3 compression is a method for compressing monochrome bitmaps that is used by fax machines, and is also available as on of the compression options in TIFF file format.

Group 3 compression is defined in the CCITT T.4 standard, and is thus often known as a type of CCITT compression.

Group 3 compression works by encoding each scanline in the bitmap with a series of variable length codes to represent sequences of black and white pixels (the code idea is somewhat similar to Huffman compression, except the codes are predefined for Group 3).

A technical discussion of Group 3 compression can be found in Chapter 6 of Graphics File Formats by David C. Kay and John R. Levine.
