Make Screen Shots

Chapter 4: Some Helpful Tools

So far, we've talked about manual methods of performing screen captures. However, there are a few issues that you need to be aware of:
  1. The manual method may not be able to capture some things, particularly some games (particularly games that use DirectX) and multimedia programs.

  2. If you want to capture a web page or document, that is larger than the screen (one that needs to scroll to show the whole thing), it's not easy to do this manually. To do it manually, you'd have to capture different sections of the page, and then manually stitch them together to join up seamlessly (hard work!).

  3. If you want to capture a specific or precise area of the screen, you have to capture the whole screen (or a whole window), and then try to crop it to the correct size.

  4. It can be very hard (and sometimes impossible) to capture things which appear only briefly on screen, for example, drop-down menus in software programs.
For this reason, if you're serious about taking screenshots, or you need to take a lot of them, you may want to get a utility to help you. I'd suggest you start by taking a look at Mr. Captor, but I'll also tell you about some alternatives to this program.
  • Mr. Captor Top Choice

Mr. Captor can capture anything that you see on your computer screen, including the entire desktop, rectangular, elliptical or freehand regions, a single window or a group of windows, and menus, cursors and colors. Mr. Captor can also capture long web pages, PDFs, DOCs and other documents by using auto-scroll feature.

The program can also record any screen activity, and save it into an AVI video file.

Mr. Captor will even capture from DirectX/Direct3D games, DVD and Media Player.

There are many other features including:

    • Extract images from EXE, DLL, OCX, and SCR files.

    • Save images in a variety of graphics formats (BMP, JPEG, PNG, GIF, ICO and many others).

    • Facilities to easily picture the exact area of screen you want (using an enlarge feature), or remove any extraneous one-color background area with a single click.

    • Support for hotkeys.

    • Image editing.

    • An image gallery to review your captured images.

    • Multiple language support, including English, Spanish, German, French, Italian and Russian languages.

    • And a lot more!
Here are some other software tools that you may wish to look at:
  • ACS Capture
ACS Capture will help you with capturing screen images in different modes (including rectangle, circle, ellipse, polygon regions), recording screen activity as AVI video files, capturing windows, capturing menus, capturing control objects, snapping icons in EXE and DLL files, and more.

  • Easy Screen Capture
Easy Screen Capture is a graphics tool for capturing any part of desktop screen. With this extremely useful software, you can make professional screenshots and save them to picture files. It can even capture cursor and support hotkeys!

  • TGrab
TGrab is a new type of "image grabber": it can not only take screenshots (either of entire screen or from the active window) in a manual mode, but also in a timer automated mode. You can configure TGrab to take a picture at your preferred timer interval, during a time limited session and/or until a specified quantity of images is reached. If you prefer, you can even run the program so that it's totally invisible and/or closes itself when done.

  • !Quick Screenshot Maker
!Quick Screenshot Maker is a powerful tool for screen capturing, screen shot editing and image organization. It can capture any part of the screen, including windows, regions, controls and DirectX game screens. It also supports capturing cursors and long scroll windows. It can perform timer-activated captures. You can draw on each image, and crop, cut, resize, rotate and mirror it. You can select transparent colors, change opacity, drop shadows, change the brightness and contrast, and add more than 40 visual effects to images. Enhance your image by adding annotations such as text, callouts, arrows, highlights to it, and easily change annotation objects' position, size and other properties. You can manage all the screenshots in the History List bar, easily open or insert an image file to current screenshot project. Make professional screenshot easily and quickly.
