How To Make Web Animations With A Photo Background

Chapter 2: Slicing Up The Background

We now need to start thinking about how to overlay our animated GIF on top of our background.

One idea might be to use CSS, but I've decided to go with a much simpler method.

I'm going to slice the background up into segments and save each as a separate JPEG image:

(There is a tutorial on how to slice images up this way on this site: How To Slice An Image Into Smaller Images).

Here's the segments that I've got:
  • The left segment, earthrisel.jpg is 190X225 pixels. This is more than big enough to accommodate the buglegs.gif animation which is 113X114 pixels. So what I plan to do is center buglegs.gif on top of this segment.

  • The center segment, earthrisec.jpg is 10X225 pixels. I'm not actually going to put an animation on top of this piece.

  • The right segment, earthriser.jpg is 90X225 pixels. This is more than big enough to accommodate the snorkel3.gif animation which is 59X162 pixels. So what I plan to do is center snorkel3.gif on top of this segment.
Before we move on though, I ought to mention one little problem that can arise when dividing images up this way: If you slice up an image and save each part as a JPEG, you can sometimes suffer from edge effects appearing, which typically appear as faint lines between the segments when you combine them together. If you do encounter this problem, go back to the original JPEG, slice it up again, and save each segment as a separate PNG file.
