How To Make A FAVICON

Chapter 2: Uploading The Icon

Once you have prepared your FAVICON file, the next step is to upload it to your web site.

If you have own domain name then simply make sure the file is called favicon.ico and upload it to the root public folder of your web site (so the URL to the icon is something like http://www.yourdomainname.com/favicon.ico).

When uploading:
  • If using an FTP program to upload, make sure that your FTP program is set to Binary transfer mode (not ASCII/Text).

  • If using a web-based control panel to upload files to your site, if it doesn't allow you to upload a .ico file, try renaming the file on your own PC to (for example) favicon.gif and then rename it on the host to the correct name, favicon.ico.
Assuming you do have your own domain name, that used the default file name of favicon.ico, and your web browser is capable of seeing FAVICONs, you should need see your FAVICONs when browsing your web site. If you don't try clearing your web browser's cache.
