    How To Design A Banner

Chapter 4: Creating Banners With Painting Software

The most obvious way to create banners is to design them on your computer using paint or drawing software:
    • You could create SWF banners using a Flash package like Adobe Flash.

    • You could create GIF, JPEG or PNG banners using a Painting program. Of course, not all packages support all formats, and some packages do not allow you to create GIF animations.

    • You could use (but it's awkward) the Paint accessory that comes with Windows. Using this program, you could create GIF, JPEG PNG banners. Paint does not allow you to create GIF animations.
It's hard to give any detailed tips when there are so many different programs that you could use, but here are a couple:
    1. You may find it easier to create the background first, save that, and then only add the detail on top afterwards.

    2. You may find it easier to work on image that is larger than your final intended banner size, perhaps first marking out the area on the image that is to be used for the banner, and then crop it down to size at the end of the editing process. This is because some software programs may make it awkward to draw very near the edge of an image.

    3. If creating a "fake" banner, I'd suggest you take your screenshots (see How To Make Screenshots) into a separate image, and then copy and paste from there into your banner image.

    4. If creating a GIF animation (assuming you have a program that allows it), sometimes it's easier to prepare each frame in the sequence as a separate image, and then join them all together into one animation only once they have all been prepared.
