RIFF is a file format devised by Microsoft for storing multimedia information, and effectively defines a container for various types of information, without specifying what the particular information need be.

Some common types of RIFF file include:
  • ANI for animated cursors

  • AVI for videos

  • Audio Waveform data (.WAV)

  • MIDI information (.RMI)

  • A bundle of other RIFF files (.BND)
