AVI File Format
Audio Visual Interleave (AVI) is a defacto standard for storing video (with sound) devised by Microsoft. AVIs are a type of RIFF files. AVI files are compressed and decompressed, using a variety of "codecs". Codecs are software modules which implement a certain compression and decompression algorithm - and in order to play back an AVI file produced on somebody else's system you will need the particular codec that was used for producing that file. Microsoft Windows comes with some Codecs as standard, but additional Codecs often come with various hardware and software packages - and that obviously can lead to problems with producing AVI files that other users may not be able to play.
