Thumbnail
A thumbnail (sometimes known as "Postage Stamp") is a small
(scaled down) version of an image, usually a bitmap.
Thumbnails can either be generated on the fly as needed, or can
be pre-prepared in separate files or as a seperate element of those
file formats which allow storage of both a main image and a thumbnail.
Thumbnails are often used in graphics software and web pages:
- Typically, in graphics software, thumbnails allow you to switch
between multiple images, by clicking on them.
- Typically, in web pages, for example in web galleries, users
can review an entire gallery of thumbnails, and then see a particular
image at full size by clicking on its thumbnail. In this case,
the webmaster usually will have prepared the thumbnails as separate
image files from the main images, by scaling down the main images.
