    Imagemap

Imagemaps are graphics used in HTML web pages, containing hyperlinked regions. When the a user clicks within a region, the user is typically sent to an associated web page.

By way of illustration, consider an imagemap containing a map of the world. When the user clicks on the region corresponding to a particular country, the user might be sent to a web page about that country.

(By the way, you needn't limit your use of imagemaps to represent actual maps. You could, for example, use an imagemap to enable different clickable regions on your web site's navigation controls).

Imagemaps can be implemented in two different ways:
    1. Client-side imagemaps, in which both the graphic and the coordinates of the regions within are sent to the user's web browser. The user's browser is then able to interpret the user's click appropriately, thus directing the user to the appropriate web page.

    2. Server-side imagemaps, in which the graphic is sent to the user's web browser. The user's browser then sends the coordinates of the user's click back to the web server, which is responsible for interpreting the meaning of that click, and which usually does so based on information stored on a file on the server. Assuming you already have the graphic for an imagemap, the difficult part is creating the coordinate data for all the various clickable regions contained within. For this reason, if you wish to create imagemaps, I recommend you consider a specialist program for this purpose, such as Web Hotspots.

This site contains a tutorial on creating your own Imagemaps: How To Make An Imagemap.
