EmbossEmbossing is an effect that many bitmap and photo editing software programs can add to photographic and other bitmap images. The result of the effect often resembles a metal or paper embossing, hence the name.The way the effect works is:
 Here is the result of embossing using Corel PhotoPaint, with the default settings (the emboss direction is 45°):  Here is the result of embossing but changing the emboss direction (it is now 315°). Notice the difference in shadows and highlights.  Next, here is the emboss effect on a photographic image (still performed using Corel PhotoPaint):
