Acquisition

A Drop Shadow is a shadow that can be added to text or graphics (especially photo objects) using graphics software. The shadow image is the same shape on the object of which is shadowing, but in a different color (usually gray) and slightly offset (usually to the lower left or lower right) from the object.

The effect of a drop shadow, is to make the object stand out from the background, as if lifting off from the page, and thus making it appear more 3 dimensional and less flat.
