How To Prevent Image Copying

Chapter 3: Transparent Image Trickery

Another technique which can make it annoying and bothersome for users to copy your images is overlay them with a transparent GIF and make the actual image part of the background.

What happens when you use this technique is if the user right clicks and attempts to save an image, they end up saving the transparent GIF rather than the actual image that they are trying to copy.

Here is an example of the type HTML code to use:
(If you're not familiar with HTML or just want to learn more, then get yourself a good HTML Tutorial).

<SPAN STYLE="background-image: url(hemcircuit.gif)"><IMG SRC="transparent.gif" WIDTH="195" HEIGHT="190" BORDER="0"></SPAN>

The key parts of the code are shown in red:
  • hemcircuit.gif is the name of the actual image.

  • transparent.gif is the name of the transparent GIF.

  • The WIDTH and HEIGHT values (in this example 195 and 190) are the width and height of the actual image.
This is quite an easy technique to prevent image copying, and can be surprisingly effective at stopping many users, therefore it's one that I think you ought to consider.

Image Protection Rocket can generate code for this if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself (or just as a time-saver if you do).
