    PDF File Format

    Short Name PDF
    Long Name Portable Document Format
    Typical File Extensions .pdf
    Contains Page Description

PDF is a document storage format developed by Adobe. In order to view PDF files on your computer, you will need the free Acrobat Reader software available from Adobe.

PDF is very good at reproducing paper documents on screen, including large multi-page documents, and is also excellent for printing them. For this reason it tends to be favored for distributing or archiving electronic versions of paper documents.

On the negative side however, some users (including me) find typical PDF files a little awkward to read on screen as compared to web pages (see for example, PDF: Unfit for Human Consumption by Dr Jakob Nielsen). For this reason, I would recommend that you use PDF only when you need to electronically reproduce the appearance and layout of paper documents (or for documents that you know will be printed), but consider other formats (such as HTML) when simply distributing/publishing information on the web.

      Paperback (416 pages)

      Product Description:

Sure, you know how to read PDFs with it, but do you know how to add comments to documents or embed 3D objects in your PDFs or establish document-level security settings? With its staggering array of document-enhancing features and supported formats, Adobe Acrobat 7 offers a world of functionality just waiting to be tapped--which means that figuring out how to do just one specific task with it can be somewhat daunting. In these pages, veteran author Donna Baker solves that problem by presenting each Acrobat task as a stand-alone unit. If, for example, you want to find out how to search for a word or a phrase in a PDF file, you can do just that--at the same time picking up a couple of tips about refining your searches. Organized in three major sections--Input, Output, and Internal Acrobat Processes--this self-contained guide is all you need to get going fast with Acrobat 7.

      By Sid Steward

      O'Reilly Media
      Paperback (304 pages)

      Product Description:
PDF--to most of the world it stands for that rather tiresome format used for documents downloaded from the web. Slow to load and slower to print, hopelessly unsearchable, and all but impossible to cut and paste from, the Portable Document Format doesn't inspire much affection in the average user. But PDF done right is another story. Those who know the ins and outs of this format know that it can be much more than electronic paper. Flexible, compact, interactive, and even searchable, PDF is the ideal way to present content across multiple platforms.

PDF Hacks unveils the true promise of Portable Document Format, going way beyond the usual PDF as paged output mechanism. PDF expert Sid Steward draws from his years of analyzing, extending, authoring, and embellishing PDF documents to present 100 clever hacks--tools, tips, quick-and-dirty or not-so-obvious solutions to common problems.

PDF Hacks will show you how to create PDF documents that are far more powerful than simple representations of paper pages. The hacks in the book cover the full range of PDF functionality, from the simple to the more complex, including generating, manipulating, annotating, and consuming PDF information. You'll learn how to manage content in PDF, navigate it, and reuse it as necessary. Far more than another guide to Adobe Acrobat, the book covers a variety of readily available tools for generating, deploying, and editing PDF.

The little-known tips and tricks in this book are ideal for anyone who works with PDF on a regular basis, including web developers, pre-press users, forms creators, and those who generate PDF for distribution. Whether you want to fine-tune and debug your existing PDF documents or explore the full potential the format offers, PDF Hacks will turn you into a PDF power user.
