MAC File Format
This is the native format of the Apple Macintosh MacPaint application, but is fairly widely supported, especially in other Macintosh applications. The format stores 720 by 576 pixel bitmap, compressed using the PackBits method. Because the image size is fixed, larger images will be cropped if necessary, and small images expanded with whitespace. As well as storing the bitmap picture, MacPaint files also contain thirty-eight 8 by 8 pixel fill patterns, which can be used in the MacPaint application for drawing. These fill patterns are generally ignored (or left blank), by other applications. A technical discussion of this format can be found in Chapter 5 of Graphics File Formats by David C. Kay and John R. Levine.
