    GEM IMG

    Short Name IMG
    Long Name GEM IMG
    Typical File Extensions .img
    Contains Bitmap

This is the native format for storing bitmaps in the GEM graphic user interface system that was popular on PCs in the 1980s (versions of GEM were also available on some other computer systems such as the Atari ST).

Files of this type were created in GEM applications such as Ventura Publisher, GEM Draw, GEM Scan and GEM Paint.

The format allows monochrome, gray scale and color images with a variety of possible color depths, however many applications which are compatible with this format may only be able to read certain variants (for example, just monochrome or 24-bit TrueColor which are the most common variants).

The data in these files can be compressed using a Run-length compression scheme, however in practice, many programs create files that are not compressed.

A technical discussion of this format can be found in Chapter 8 of Graphics File Formats by David C. Kay and John R. Levine.
