FITS File Format

Short Name FITS
Long Name Flexible Image Transport System
Typical File Extensions .fits
Contains Bitmap and Astronomical Data

This format is a standard format used in used astronomy. While it can store bitmaps of astronomical images, it can also store astronomical/scientific data.

The data in these files is not compressed, which can lead to some very large file sizes.

A technical discussion of this format can be found in Chapter 18 of Graphics File Formats by David C. Kay and John R. Levine. Please note: This book focuses on the imaging aspects of this format (not particularly addressing the scientific data), and may not cover any improvements/changes to the format since the book was published.
