ASF File Format

Short Name ASF
Long Name Microsoft Advanced System Format
Typical File Extensions .asf
Contains Video/Audio

ASF is a file format devised by Microsoft for storing video and/or audio data.

ASF is an extensible file format, and uses installable "codecs" to compress into, and decompresss from, the format. This presents a potential problem in that a user may not be able to play an ASF file unless they have the correct codecs installed.

Microsoft gets around much of this problem, by naming files with different extensions, giving a hint as to the codec:
  • WMA files, are ASF audio files that use the are compressed using the Windows Media Audio (WMA) codec.

  • WMV files, are ASF files containing audio, or video, or both audio and video, that are compressed using Windows Media Audio (WMA) codec and Windows Media Video (WMV) codec.
