    Compression

Compression is a method of storing images, (or for that matter other data), so that it takes up less storage space. Some file formats allow compression, whereas others do not.
    • An image is said to be "compressed" if it is stored in a format utilizing compression.

    • An image is said to be "uncompressed" if it is stored in a format that does not utilize compression.

    • The process of converting an uncompressed image (typically in memory) to a compressed image (typically in file storage), is called "compressing".

    • The process of converting an compressed image (typically in file storage) to an uncompressed image (typically in memory), is called "decompressing".
There are many ways that compression can be achieved, but broadly speaking the methods fall into two main categories:
    1. Lossless Compression in which the original image/data is perfectly preserved when converted into compressed form.

    2. Lossy Compression in which some details of the image may be lost when the image is converted into compress form. Lossy Compression methods usually attempt to remove only those details that a normal observer would not notice, but can sometimes introduce visible artifacts or edge effects into the image.
