How To Slice An Image Into Smaller Images

Chapter 3: Slicing Images Horizontally Into Two Segments

Let's imagine that we have an image like this:

And we want to slice it horizontally into two separate segments, and then save each segment as a separate image to get pieces like this:

This is very similar to the process that we discussed in chapter 1, except this time, we need to flip pieces vertically (instead of horizontally), and we need to edit the height (instead of the width) of the images.

Let's run through the steps involved:
    1. Open the image into the Microsoft Windows Paint accessory:

    2. Click Attributes... on the Image menu:

Change the Height to the intended height of the top slice of the image (In this example, 165). Then click OK.

    3. The image is now cropped to contain only the top slice:

Now Save As... the image under the new file name, in this example, I picked fruittop.gif.

The top slice of the image is now complete.

    4. Now go back to the original image, and Open it into the Windows paint accessory:

    5. Click Flip/Rotate... on the Image menu:

Select Flip vertical and click OK:

    6. You'll now see the original image flipped vertically:

    7. Click Attributes... on the Image menu:

Change the Height to the intended height of the bottom slice of the image (In this example, 100). Then click OK.

    8. The paint program should now contain the bottom slice of the image, but flipped vertically:

    9. Click Flip/Rotate... on the Image menu:

Select Flip vertical and click OK:

    10. The image is now cropped to contain only the bottom slice:

Now Save As... the image under the new file name, in this example, I picked fruitbottom.gif.

The bottom slice of the image is now complete.
