Chapter 1: The Problem

If you're wanting to use a tiled image as the background for your web pages, the problem is that most images, simply don't join together nicely...

For example, here's a small image (this ope happens to be 75 by 100 pixels):



And here's what it looks like when lots of these images are tiled together (notice the broken joins between the tiles, where one tile doesn't smoothly connect to another):

So, the first question is: How can you easily convert any image into an image which smoothly tiles together?

(Please note, this technique may not work too well on JPEG images for reasons that we'll discuss in Chapter 7 - but don't worry, we have some workrounds for these cases).

Note: Some painting programs include an option to convert any image into a tiling image - and if you have one of these programs, you probably may not need the next couple of chapters of this tutorial).
